"My (musical) world is a little bit dark... a little bit off-center. I think of it as tragically beautiful. That is how I would describe what I love best: tragically beautiful."
~David Lynch & Angelo Badalamenti~

~Twin Peaks (1990)~

All the songs from the album were written by Angelo Badalamenti, which received the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "Twin Peaks Theme". Most of the songs are instrumental pieces, but the three songs that contain lyrics were written by David Lynch. These three songs are available on the singer Julee Cruise's album Floating into the Night. Cruise's album also contains songs that were used in the series, but are not included in any soundtrack release.

David Lynch's TWIN PEAKS was, among other things, the first series to bring surrealism to prime time television. Angelo Badalamenti's score, on the other hand, was the first to introduce downtown post-modernism. Badalamenti's harmonic palette was straight out of '50s rock. But the resultant music was slow and doomy, a collage of shimmering synths, twangy Duane Eddy guitars, and finger snaps that seemed uncannily sinister. Highlights include the popular "Twin Peaks Theme," which manages the remarkable feat of being at once lush and minimalist, and "Into The Night," an unsettling combination of innocence and lasciviousness as sung by Lynch protege Julee Cruise.

One night, I sat down, the ideas came in, and it was a most beautiful experience. Everything was seen from a different angle ... Now, looking back, I see that (the film) always wanted to be this way. It just took this strange beginning to cause it to be what it is.

Whether you believe "Inland Empire" is a great film filled with mystery, or a meaningless assemblage of unsettling scenes, you can't deny that it has a great soundtrack. Sound design has become so important to Lynch that all of his films since "Lost Highway" feature a constant extra-diegetic sound source of some sort. In "Lost Highway", there were obvious musical selections separated by ominous rumblings and barely audible industrial sounds. Now in IE, the distinction between what is "music" in the traditional sense and what is ambient sound is almost totally blurred. Not all music has melody, and not all ambient sound is without melody - even if only in an abstract sense. While I'm disappointed that Angelo Badalamenti didn't collaborate, Lynch seems to have taken on the task himself with great success. (By  Steward Willons, Amazon)
